How Many Cards in Rummy? Your Quick Guide to 7 Card Rummy

Want to jump into a fast-paced card game? rummy is your answer! But before you deal, you need to know the basics. One of the most common questions is: how many cards in rummy? Let’s dive into the popular 7 card rummy variation and get you ready to play.

In 7 card rummy, as the name suggests, each player gets dealt seven cards. Pretty straightforward, right? The remaining cards form the stockpile, and the top card of the stockpile is flipped to start the discard pile. Now for the fun part: melding!

The goal in rummy is to meld your cards into sets and sequences. A set is three or four cards of the same rank but different suits (like three Jacks). A sequence is three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order (like the 5, 6, and 7 of Hearts).

On your turn, you’ll draw a card from either the stockpile or the discard pile. Then, you can meld any sets or sequences you have in your hand. Finally, you discard one card onto the discard pile, ending your turn.

Winning in 7 card rummy comes down to being the first player to meld all their cards. Once you’ve formed all your cards into valid sets and sequences, you lay them down and declare “Rummy!”

Key 7 Card Rummy Rules to Remember:

  • Number of Players: Usually 2-6 players.
  • Objective: Meld all your cards into sets and sequences.
  • Gameplay: Draw, meld, discard.
